Iron Supplement FAQ

Do I need to take a stool softener with iron?

The most common iron supplements can result in gastrointestinal upset and occasional constipation. Your doctor may recommend that you also take a stool softener if taking iron makes you constipated. Some iron supplements already contain stool-softening ingredients, such as docusate sodium, so that you do not have to take a separate product.

Taking an alternative form of iron, like Bifera heme-based iron, may minimize gastrointestinal complaints as compared to non-heme iron "irons salts," such as ferrous sulfate and ferrous gluconate.

Do I need to take a stool softener with Bifera?

No, most users do not combine Bifera with a stool softener. The two types of iron that make up the Bifera formula, heme and non-heme irons, maximize absorption while minimizing gastrointestinal side effects such as diarrhea, constipation and nausea.
